Thank You For Paying Attention!

"unlikely event"

As I shoe-horned myself into the airplane seat and prepared for my flight from Kona to Honolulu I noticed the flight attendant asking that all those who were seated on exit rows give her their attention. She then proceeded to say a million words in just under a minute describing what each of these passengers needed to be ready to do in the “unlikely event of an emergency”. Though I was not sitting in the exit row I could hear words such as fire, water, debris and a 41 pound door that they would need to move “in case of an emergency crash landing.” She asked if they could perform these duties and then nodded her head in the affirmative for them as it was plainly obvious none of them were even remotely paying attention. Maybe I was being picky, but as I looked at the folks on the exit rows it would have generous to say 2 of the 10 would be able to handle that heavy door and not be crushed by it. I promise it’s not because I was jealous that they had more leg room then I did. Honest! It’s just that even though it’s an “unlikely event” I’d still like to know that the ones who will largely determine whether I sink or swim would actually be able to “perform these duties” and actually be paying attention to what those responsibilities are. The reality is that, unlike every other one of us on that flight, they were not just passengers, but participants in the safety of everyone on board.
I think this is what the apostle was getting at when he wrote his letter to the Colossian Church, “Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ – that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.” (Colossians 3:2)
In the spirit of Thanksgiving I wanted to thank each and every one of you who call New Hope Legacy your home church! Unlike the passengers on that exit row one thing I have noticed right off about you is that you are very much paying attention to “what is going on around Christ”. You are meeting needs in the church. You are meeting needs in your homes. You are meeting needs in Kona. You have certainly met the needs of my family and I as we have settled in here over the past few months. Your sensitivity to us means more to me then you could possible know. Thank you for not just being passengers but participants in what Christ is doing! Thank you for realizing that we have each been placed by Divine Design in the lives of friends and family (framily) who are relying on us to show them the way through and the way to Christ!
I look forward to our first holiday season in Kona with you and celebrating the true reason for the season together! From our Ohana to yours- Happy Thanksgiving!
